Malware is rarely good news, but occasionally there is an upside. It introduced me to the online communities that exist to help the infected - and perhaps it helped to save some hedgehogs, an outcome I’m certain the malware authors could never have foreseen.

Arsenal Fan Site Compromised, Serves Malware

Sports fan sites being compromised by malicious authors is not unheard of. We’ve seen it happen to a Jets fan site in early January this year, and we’re seeing it again in another fan site–this time of Arsenal, a popular English soccer team.

Trojan.Pandex Doing More Than Spamming

Trojan.Pandex was first found in early 2007 and is a Trojan that is primarily used to send spam. Obviously the author has more ambition than to stick with simply spamming because we’ve observed the Trojan enhancing its functions continuously over the past month or so.

Nonpersistent Web threats

For the past year, I’ve been writing about the use of iframes to compromise legitimate Web sites with links to malicious code servers. It’s easy for criminal hackers to compromise a site if it is poorly managed and open to cross-site scripting attacks (think ma-and-pa e-commerce sites). Over the summer, automated versions of these attacks [...]

A Particularly Nasty Week For Malware

This is turning into quite a week for computer security. Microsoft issued a rare out of band security alert concerning Excel; BusinessWeek’s home page has been the victim of a hack and more than 400 banks are the targets of a new Trojan. If that wasn’t enough, the one year anniversary of the Storm worm [...]
